There’s no better time than Summer to sit by the lake or at your favourite reading spot around the community. A top tip to save some extra cash on your summer reads is to head to the North Lakes Library to borrow some books, with options suitable for every age.

We’ve compiled a reading list to give you some inspiration when browsing the shelves this summer. From magical stories for kids, to thrilling adventures for teens and captivating fiction books for adults our reading list has something for everyone.

For kids:

Where the Wild Things Are – by Maurice Sendak

This timeless classic follows the adventures of Max, a mischievous boy with a wild imagination. This coming of age book is great for little ones who love adventure.

The Day the Crayons Quit – by Drew Daywalt

What would happen if your crayons went on strike?! This lighthearted, creative and funny book takes a great approach to teaching children about perspectives and empathy in a humorous way.

For teens:

Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan

This story follows the life of protagonist Percy Jackson as he discovers that he is a demigod and thrust into a world of Greek mythology. Perfect for kids who love a tale of action-packed adventure and maybe even have a passion for history and Greek mythology.

The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

This dystopian thriller has become a global phenomenon set in a world where a brutal televised event called the “Hunger Games” exists to punish those who defy the Capitol. It has even been developed into a film series so it could make for a good movie night after your teen has completed reading it (some violent themes, parental discretion advised).

For adults:

Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens

Where the Crawdads sing is a fictional story which revolves around main character Kya who goes up in the marsh surrounding North Carolina. When a local man is found dead, Kya becomes the prime suspect in a story of resilience, romance and the beauty of nature. An interestingly told murder mystery that will be sure to keep you on the edge of your seat.

Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus

Lessons in Chemistry follows the twists and turns of brilliant chemist Elizabeth Zott. Set in the 1960s she finds herself trapped in a world of sexism and not being taken seriously within her field until she unexpectedly becomes a cooking show host. This novel is both humorous, empowering and equally as heartfelt and touching at times.

We hope this reading list has given you some inspiration to add to your summer reads collection. To share the love, why not start a book club and review your favourite reads together as a fun way to learn more about the book and ensure that you actually finish it!
